Disney Re-imagining Their Most Popular Ride to Combat Racism

Splash Mountain, which has existed since 1989 and has been a longtime popular ride, is going to be changed due to concerns of racism.

Splash Mountain is based off of the 1946 film “Song of the South”. It is a log flume ride which features numerous characters from the film, most notably Brer Rabbit. It is also notable for its iconic “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” song.

The film has been criticized for romanticizing the antebellum South and for alleged racist stereotypes, in characters such as Uncle Remus. Disney has kept the movie off of Disney+ and also had it locked away for decades.

Earlier in 2020, Bob Iger (then CEO of Disney) said the film was simply “not appropriate in today’s world.”

So it appears that the ride will not be destroyed, but rather changed. And it appears quite likely to be Disney’s film The Princess and the Frog.

Around 20,000 signatures have been made on a petition on Change.org to change the ride to one that is themed around The Princess and the Frog.

CNN had this to report, confirming that Princess and the Frog is all but certain to be the new theme- “Disney added that the new ride — which the company has been working on since last year — will pick up the story of ‘Princess and the Frog’ after ‘the final kiss’ and will join Princess Tiana and her trumpet-playing alligator Louis ‘on a musical adventure.’ It will feature ‘some of the powerful music from the film as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.”
