3 Reasons AOC is a Terrible Congresswoman

Freshman Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a knack for getting attention. Love her or hate her she has made history with her upset in the Democratic Primary against 20-year Congressman Joe Crowley. The media either loves her or loves criticizing her. This article is devoted to 3 things in particular that are very unappealing about her.

First of all, she cost New York at least 25,000 jobs in just one month of becoming a Congresswoman. That’s actually impressive. What happened was Governor Cuomo wanted to make a $2.8 billion tax cut for Amazon in exchange for it building a major center in New York City. Cuomo justified the decision as the deal would have brought “… At least 25,000 to 40,000 good paying jobs for our state and nearly $30 billion dollars in new revenue to fund transit improvements, new housing, schools and countless other quality-of-life improvements.” However, AOC and likeminded individuals badmouthed the deal, saying that Amazon would pay zero dollars in federal income tax in 2018 despite a $11 billion profit. As a result of their continued protesting Amazon ultimately pulled out a large part of their planned arrangement in New York.

Secondly- her grandest scheme and the one most people champion as proof of her virtue is actually proof of the opposite. Her “Green New Deal”- a proposal which would cost approximately $93 trillion and would require large scale government takeover of certain industries. AOC defended the decision saying, “We’re, like, the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.” Her chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti however, unintentionally gave another possible reason for her motives: “[I]t wasn’t originally a climate thing at all,” he was quoted in reference to the Green New Deal. Instead, it happened to originally be a convenient means of establishing socialism as the status quo while using the environment as the justification. There was a reason why nuclear power was avoided in the Deal’s provisions.

Thirdly, her speeches are the equivalent of more eloquent temper tantrums. It’s a pity because I love studying rhetoric from both the left and the right. But there is simply no rhetoric with her- no subtlety, hardly any logos. Just sheer emotion, hand flailing and voice raising. I could see someone being inspired from her bartender to Congresswoman story but when I see her make a speech she is not likeable. She is condescending and angry. Her tweets are much more convincing to me when she argues than when she typically makes a speech.

Now I will say I do respect her for being gutsy enough to try and take on the establishment when she ran in 2018- a 29 year old bartender- and winning. Even though I do not see eye to eye with her on most things, I respect that she managed to do what most could not. Everyone else could take some inspiration from that.

  1. What all national politicians want is to save the world. The attitude that they know better than the common person on the street is one of the most arrogant positions since power politics became the way to leadership positions.

    1. Exactly! And thank you! She presents herself as an intellectual but then resorts to talking like that, it’s very pretentious.
