US taxpayers have spent $291 million to eight non-profit organizations that serve, protect or defend undocumented immigrants between 2012 and 2016, according to an analysis of the Federal Expenditure and Fiscal Documents expenses of the Daily Investigator Group.
The eight groups, including at least one that supported Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016, provide a variety of support to undocumented aliens ranging from legal and social services to political advocacy.
94% of the public funds, or roughly $274 million, came from the federal government, according to data obtained by the governments online budget data website in addition to the revision of 990 tax forms.
The total of $ 291 million in public funds, however, is almost certainly an underestimate, since the respective 990 forms of each nonprofit implicated for the five years were not always available. It should also be borne in mind that these groups represent only a small sample of publicly funded, undocumented pro-immigrant, non-profit organizations.
Research from the Urban Institute say that:
At least 684 national non-profit organizations offer some form of legal assistance to immigrants, “a study by the Urban Institute said in 2013. More than half of these institutions had budgets in excess of $ 1 million, but a More detailed breakdown to reveal how much support comes from government agencies.
The Urban Institute study also claimed that there were very few charities at the time to serve the growing “undocumented population” and that additional support from constituency was necessary. The aforementioned study estimated that in California there are about 111 non-profit organizations that provide assistance to immigrants who could serve 22,973 undocumented immigrants each.
