Debunking Rape Culture

Many leftist feminists say that in the West, in America in particular, there is an all-pervasive “rape culture.” If this claim is true, then it must be addressed, as I doubt any of us wants to live in such a culture. However, is it true? What evidence is there of this?

First, we must address: “What is a rape culture?”

According to feminist author Emilie Buchwald, a rape culture implies: “a complex set of beliefs that encourage male sexual aggression and supports violence against women. It is a society where violence is seen as sexy and sexuality as violent. In a rape culture, women perceive a continuum of threatened violence that ranges from sexual remarks to sexual touching to rape itself. A rape culture condones physical and emotional terrorism against women as the norm . . . In a rape culture both men and women assume that sexual violence is a fact of life, inevitable . . . However . . . much of what we accept as inevitable is in fact the expression of values and attitudes that can change.”

However, this is clearly not true. In a rare poll conducted on this topic, 27% of Europeans said sex without consent is ever okay. Plus, that poll might have been one of the worst-conducted polls ever.

Let’s take the broadest possible view of that poll. That would mean that 27% of Europeans believe rape is okay. Clearly, 1/4 of a group of people does not a culture make. And that’s taking that as wide as possible, which clearly isn’t called for, based on the poll itself. Realistically, a small fraction of these people view rape as okay.

A place where the “rape culture” is supposed to be prevalent is on college campuses. It is often alleged that “1 in 4 or 5 women are raped on college campuses.” 1. According to the author of that study, “We don’t think one in five is a nationally representative statistic.”

2. A better study, conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, showed that less than 7 in 1,000 women on college campuses are raped.

If there was a rape culture on campus, surely it no longer exists. According to the study, there are actually slightly more rapes off campus, and that could be due to the fact that there are more police on campus.

Therefore, no rape culture exists. Checkmate, leftists.
